Is your shower looking old, worn and in desperate need of a face lift? As one of the most frequently used rooms in your home, the bathroom is one of the first to get run down, and the shower is no exception. The good news is, sprucing things up can be quicker, easier and much less expensive than you may think. We asked our shower experts to share their biggest tips for making an old shower look new again, and here’s what they had to say.

Clean it.

Ok, admittedly this seems ridiculously simple, but it can make such a difference that it’s worth mentioning. Of course, you already clean your shower regularly, but we’re not talking about a quick spray and wipe-down. We’re talking deep-cleaning. If you have tile, this means scrubbing that grout. For fiberglass, using hydrogen peroxide can help get rid of unsightly stains. And don’t forget your glass shower door. To get it clear and sparkling once again, use commercial glass cleaner or make your own natural solution using vinegar and water.

Pro tip: once your shower is squeaky clean, you can maintain that level of cleanliness by wiping it down and/or squeegeeing it after each use. This will reduce water buildup and prevent things like mold and mildew from developing.

Update the fixtures.

Old, outdated fixtures can sully the look of an otherwise beautiful shower. In addition to deep cleaning your shower, you may want to consider changing out the showerhead, faucet and other fixtures. There are literally hundreds of different styles to choose from, so you should have no shortage of options.

If you are handy, you can probably tackle this task on your own – just remember to turn off the water before starting your project. If you’re unsure how to do this, contact your local handyman for assistance. Changing out shower fixtures should be a relatively quick, easy and inexpensive job.

Change the hardware.

Another way to breathe new life into a tired, old shower is to update the hardware. If your shower has a frame, this can be changed out to a different style or color. Likewise, the handle on your shower door can also be updated to give your bathroom a new look and feel. Hardware and other accessories come in a wide selection of styles and finishes that can easily match and complement your fixtures.

Some of these updates, such as changing out your shower door handles, can be done as a DIY project. Others, like replacing the frame, are best left to the pros. Our design experts can help every step of the way, from picking the perfect style to professional installation and more.

Go frameless.

Last, but certainly not least, replacing your current shower enclosure with frameless glass is one of the most effective ways to bring your bathroom from basic to beautiful. Best of all, not only do frameless glass shower enclosures offer a quick and viable solution from a design perspective, but they’re also much more affordable than you may think.
