One of the nicest things about frameless shower doors is that they offer the best of both worlds in terms of functionality and aesthetic appeal. That being said, achieving the perfect bathroom look with a frameless shower is not as simple and straightforward as you may think. There are many additional decisions to be made, particular as it relates to the design of your new shower. If you’re in the early stages of the process and are interested installing this type of shower set up in your home, here are a few helpful tips from our design experts.

Use at least some standard angles.

When it comes to installing a frameless shower, there’s a lot of flexibility in terms of design and layout. It’s not uncommon to see frameless enclosures with unique or unusual angles. This is typically done as a way to accommodate a non-standard floorplan or bathroom layout. Keep in mind, though, that using all unique angles can sometimes lead to issues with door movement and water flow. As such, it’s wise to stick with at least a few standard angles. That way it’ll meet the needs of your space but still function optimally. (Your installer should be able to provide specific guidance here.)

Be strategic about where you place your shower head(s).

The last thing you want after investing in a beautiful frameless shower enclosure is to run into issues with leaking. This is why it’s so important to be mindful of where you place your shower head(s). Make sure that all nozzles are pointed toward the glass or tile wall of the enclosure and never directly toward the door itself. This will improve the functionality of your shower and prevent the chance of leaks.

Keep proper drainage in mind.

For optimal usage, frameless shower enclosures must be designed with appropriate drainage. A shower floor that doesn’t properly drain will result in water pooling which can cause damage and could contribute to the growth of dangerous mold and mildew. In addition to ensuring proper drain placement, it’s also important that the shower floor be installed at the appropriate incline. This helps direct water to the right spot for adequate drainage purposes.

Rethink glass tiles.

Many homeowners like the aesthetic appeal of glass tiles and decide to incorporate them into their frameless glass shower enclosures. The problem is, glass tiles are more fragile and therefore more susceptible to cracking due to the drilling that’s necessary during the installation process. That’s not to say glass tiles are a total no-go. You can still use them, but try to create a pattern that results in an alternate type of tile being placed strategically where the shower enclosure will be secured to the wall.

These are just a few of the factors to consider when designing your frameless shower door set up. There are also a number of other design options, from hardware choices to the glass itself.
